Permanent Makeup: What to Know Before Your First Appointment

Powder brows, microblading, lip blush — permanent makeup services are increasingly popular, but many first-time clients come in with misconceptions. Here's an honest guide to what the process actually involves.

Permanent makeup has become one of the most requested services at GloUp Med Spa — and with good reason. Well-executed powder brows or lip blush can genuinely transform a morning routine. But it's also a category full of misconceptions, inconsistent quality, and outcomes that range from beautiful to deeply regrettable.

This guide is written for first-time clients. If you've done your research but still have unanswered questions, or if you've had a mixed experience elsewhere and are trying to understand what went wrong, this is for you.

What "Permanent Makeup" Actually Means

The term is a bit misleading. Permanent makeup — also called cosmetic tattooing or micropigmentation — does involve depositing pigment into the skin using a needle or blade tool. But it's not permanent in the same way a conventional tattoo is.

The pigment is placed in the upper dermis, shallower than standard tattoo ink. The body metabolizes it over time. Most permanent makeup fades gradually over 1–3 years depending on the technique used, your skin type, sun exposure, and how well you follow aftercare. Touch-ups are part of maintaining the look.

Think of it as semi-permanent rather than permanent — though the original term has stuck in the industry.

The Main Services: What's Different About Each

Powder Brows

Powder brows (sometimes called ombre brows or microshading) use a digital PMU machine to create a soft, powdered effect that mimics the look of filled-in brows. The result is softer and more diffuse than microblading — no visible "hair strokes," just a gradient of color that looks like you've applied brow powder or pomade.

Powder brows tend to heal more consistently than microblading, hold color longer, and are better suited for clients with oily skin. They also tend to age more gracefully — the soft gradient fades evenly rather than the stroke-by-stroke fading that microblading can produce.

Microblading

Microblading uses a manual blade tool to create thin incisions in the skin that are then filled with pigment, mimicking the appearance of individual brow hairs. When done well on the right candidate, microblading looks extremely natural.

The right candidate has drier, normal to combination skin with defined pores. Microblading on oily skin often doesn't hold as well — the pigment can blur or fade unevenly because of increased sebum production. For oily skin clients, powder brows or combination (combo) brows typically produce better long-term results.

Combo Brows

Combo brows use both techniques: microblading strokes in the body of the brow for texture and depth, with powder shading throughout for density and dimension. This is currently the most popular technique for clients who want natural-looking brows with more color saturation than microblading alone provides.

Permanent Eyeliner

Permanent eyeliner uses a PMU machine to deposit pigment along the lash line — creating the appearance of liner that you never have to apply. The style can range from a tight lash enhancement (just the base of the lashes) to a full liner effect. This is a popular service for clients who wear liner daily and want to simplify their routine.

Note: permanent eyeliner carries higher sensitivity around the eye area. Numbing is used, but clients should have realistic expectations about discomfort and healing time.

Lip Blush

Lip blush is a watercolor-style technique that adds tone and definition to the lips, correcting uneven pigmentation and enhancing natural lip shape without creating a sharp, drawn-on edge. The result looks like your lips, but better — more defined and evenly toned.

Lip blush is not designed to dramatically change lip shape or create high-contrast liner. Clients looking for that style are better served by a different application.

The Consultation: What It Covers

Before any permanent makeup service at GloUp Med Spa, you'll have a consultation with your artist. This isn't a sales conversation — it's an assessment. Your artist will:

  • Evaluate your skin type and how it's likely to accept and hold pigment
  • Review your face shape and existing brow/lip structure to determine what will work best for your features
  • Show you reference images and discuss your desired outcome
  • Discuss color selection — choosing a shade that complements your natural coloring and doesn't oxidize oddly
  • Explain the healing process and set realistic expectations for what healed results will look like

The healed result looks different from the fresh result. Knowing this in advance prevents the panic that some clients experience during the first two weeks of healing.

The Healing Process: Week by Week

This is where first-time clients are most often caught off guard. Here's what to expect.

Days 1–3: The brows (or lips, or liner) will appear significantly darker and more saturated than the final result. This is normal. The pigment sits on top of the skin before it absorbs. Some swelling is common.

Days 4–7: The treated area begins to peel or flake. Do not pick at it. Picking removes pigment from the healing skin and creates uneven retention. It also increases the risk of scarring. The area will look patchy and uneven during this stage.

Days 7–14: Much of the surface pigment has shed. The brows or lips may look lighter than expected, or even sparse. This is also normal. The pigment is still settling into the skin beneath the peeled surface layer.

Weeks 3–6: The true healed color emerges. By this point, you'll have a clear picture of how your skin retained the pigment and whether a touch-up is needed.

The 6-week touchup appointment is not optional — it's built into the process. At this appointment, your artist can fill in any areas that didn't retain evenly, adjust color if needed, and finalize the shape. Budget for it from the start.

What Affects How Long Results Last

Skin type is the biggest variable. Oily skin metabolizes pigment faster than dry skin. Clients with very oily skin may need touch-ups annually.

Sun exposure breaks down pigment faster. SPF applied over brows (once healed) is one of the most effective ways to extend the longevity of your results.

Skincare products — particularly retinol, acids, and exfoliants — accelerate fading when applied near the treated area.

The pigment itself matters. Professional-grade pigments formulated for cosmetic tattooing hold and fade more predictably than conventional tattoo inks. At GloUp Med Spa, we use pigments specifically designed for PMU applications.

What to Do Before Your Appointment

  • Avoid blood thinners for at least 48 hours before your appointment: aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, and alcohol.
  • Do not use retinol or acids in the treatment area for 2 weeks prior.
  • Avoid tanning and significant sun exposure for 2 weeks before treatment.
  • Do not arrive with freshly waxed or threaded brows — we need your natural brow growth present for proper shape assessment.
  • Come with your typical brow makeup applied if you have a specific shape you've been drawing. It helps your artist understand your reference point.

Permanent Makeup Removal Is Possible

Regret over permanent makeup is more common than the industry would like to acknowledge — particularly for brows that have faded to an unflattering warm or ashy tone, or work applied by less experienced artists. PicoWay laser can safely fade and remove unwanted permanent makeup, including powder brows, microblading, eyeliner, and lip liner.

If you're dealing with old or poorly executed permanent makeup that you want corrected or removed, that's a conversation we're happy to have. You don't have to live with it.
