How Many Sessions Does Laser Tattoo Removal Take?
The most common question before starting tattoo removal — and the honest answer is: it depends. Here's what actually drives session count, and what you should know before booking.
Laser Technology
PicoWay is the laser platform behind our tattoo removal and skin rejuvenation treatments. Here's an honest explanation of how it works, what makes it different, and why the difference actually matters for your results.

If you've looked into laser tattoo removal or laser skin treatments, you've probably encountered the term PicoWay. You may have also seen other laser names — Q-switched, Nd:YAG, nanosecond, picosecond — and wondered what any of it actually means.
This post breaks it down in plain language. No unnecessary jargon. Just enough science to understand why the technology you choose for your treatment matters.
All laser tattoo removal relies on the same fundamental principle: a laser delivers targeted energy into the skin, which is absorbed by tattoo ink particles. That energy causes the particles to shatter into smaller fragments. Those fragments are then cleared by the immune system over the following weeks.
The critical variables are:
These variables determine how completely the ink shatters, how much heat is transferred to surrounding tissue, and ultimately how quickly and safely a tattoo clears.
Traditional laser tattoo removal systems — Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers — operate at nanosecond pulse durations. A nanosecond is one billionth of a second. These systems were the gold standard for tattoo removal for decades, and they work.
PicoWay operates at picosecond pulse durations. A picosecond is one trillionth of a second — one thousand times shorter than a nanosecond.
That difference isn't just a number. It describes a fundamentally different physical process.
When laser energy is delivered in nanosecond pulses, the primary mechanism is photothermal — the ink absorbs energy, heats up, and fractures. This creates some degree of heat transfer to the surrounding dermis.
When laser energy is delivered in picosecond pulses, the pulse is so short that the ink doesn't have time to transfer heat to surrounding tissue before it shatters. This is called the photoacoustic effect — the rapid pressure change physically breaks apart ink particles rather than burning them apart.
The practical difference: picosecond systems create smaller ink fragments, with less thermal damage to surrounding skin tissue.
Smaller fragments are cleared more efficiently by the immune system. Less thermal damage means lower risk of scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Both matter enormously for outcomes and safety.
Most lasers operate at a single wavelength. Wavelength determines which colors the laser can effectively target — different ink pigments absorb different wavelengths.
PicoWay operates at three wavelengths:
This multi-wavelength design is specifically engineered to address the full spectrum of tattoo ink colors, including the notoriously resistant greens and blues that single-wavelength systems often struggle with. For multicolor tattoos, this matters significantly.
PicoWay isn't just a tattoo removal system. The Resolve applicator uses a fractional lens to split the laser beam into hundreds of tiny beams, each creating a micro-injury in the dermis without breaking the surface of the skin.
This fractional approach stimulates collagen and elastin production in the treated area. Over subsequent weeks and months, the skin remodels — improving texture, tone, and overall quality. This makes PicoWay Resolve effective for:
The key advantage over ablative resurfacing (like CO2 laser) is that the skin surface is not removed, which means significantly shorter downtime — typically 1–3 days of mild redness versus 1–2 weeks of recovery with ablative procedures.
PicoSure is the other major picosecond laser system on the market. PicoSure operates primarily at 755nm with limited multi-wavelength capability. PicoWay's three-wavelength configuration gives it more flexibility across skin types and ink colors.
Q-switched Nd:YAG (nanosecond) systems are effective and widely available. They work. The comparison is that picosecond technology typically achieves similar or better clearance in fewer sessions, with reduced risk of thermal side effects. For clients with darker skin types, picosecond systems are generally considered safer.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is not a laser — it emits a broad spectrum of light rather than a focused wavelength. IPL has applications for vascular treatments and mild pigmentation, but is not appropriate for tattoo removal and is significantly less precise than laser for skin rejuvenation.
It's worth being clear about limitations.
PicoWay cannot guarantee complete tattoo removal in all cases. Dense scarring, certain ink formulations, and deeply saturated areas may not clear completely regardless of the laser used. Most tattoos achieve 90%+ clearance with appropriate treatment, but complete 100% clearance is not guaranteed.
PicoWay facial rejuvenation is not a substitute for surgical procedures. It can significantly improve skin quality and texture, but it cannot replicate the structural results of a facelift, blepharoplasty, or deep resurfacing in a single session. Realistic expectations — set during a consultation — are essential.
We chose PicoWay because it represents the current leading edge of what picosecond technology can do across both tattoo removal and skin rejuvenation applications. The multi-wavelength system lets us treat a wider range of ink colors and skin types than most single-wavelength alternatives. The photoacoustic mechanism gives us a favorable safety profile across Fitzpatrick types III–VI, which is relevant for our Tulsa client base.
We'd rather invest in the right equipment and explain why it matters than offer a less effective option at a lower price point.
The best way to understand how PicoWay will work for your skin and your treatment goals is to come in for a consultation. We'll assess your tattoo or skin concern in person, explain what to realistically expect, and give you a clear picture of the process — including number of sessions and timeline.
